Micro-guide Catheter

Micro-guide catheters, also known as microcatheters, are precision medical devices that play a crucial role in neurointerventional procedures. These devices are specifically designed for delicate endovascular manipulations, allowing physicians to navigate through complex vascular networks and treat a wide range of conditions.

Micro-guide catheters are typically composed of several key components, including a catheter shaft, a hub, and a torqueable sheath. The catheter shaft is often constructed from materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyurethane elastomers, and stainless steel for reinforcement, while the hub may be made of nylon or similar materials. The torqueable sheath provides added flexibility and durability, enabling the catheter to be manipulated with precision.

Many micro-guide catheters are also equipped with radiopaque markers, which allow for better visualization under fluoroscopy, and hydrophilic coatings to enhance lubricity and reduce friction during insertion.

Uses and Applications

Micro-guide catheters have a multitude of applications in neurointerventional surgery, including but not limited to:

Navigation and Access: These catheters can be guided through tortuous vascular pathways to reach distal vessels, providing a pathway for subsequent therapeutic interventions.

Drug Delivery: Micro-guide catheters enable the precise delivery of therapeutic agents, such as embolic materials for aneurysm embolization, directly to the site of interest.

Embolization Therapy: In the treatment of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), or arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), micro-guide catheters are used to deploy embolic materials like coils or liquid embolics to occlude the abnormal blood vessels.

Stent Deployment: They can also be used to deliver stents to stenotic or damaged vascular areas, restoring blood flow and improving patient outcomes.

Thrombus Aspiration: In acute ischemic stroke cases, micro-guide catheters can be paired with aspiration devices to remove blood clots and restore cerebral blood flow.

Angiography: Detailed angiography can be performed using micro-guide catheters, providing valuable information about vascular structure and pathology.

Diagnostic Procedures: These catheters can also facilitate diagnostic procedures such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), allowing for the acquisition of high-resolution images of the vessel wall.
